Good Morning West Hills Baptist Church

We are so happy to be publishing our first blog since July.  Most of you know that I had a stroke in August when I went into the hospital to have an arteriogram.   I have had to take it easy for a little while but I am pleased to say that I am progressing with my rehabilitation and doing great.  The Lord is good!

The Library Committee has continued to work together and we have some more great additions to tell you about this month.   Thank you for continuing to make donations to the library.

The following have made donations to us since July:

Jeff and Jennifer Medlin, Susan Crabtree, Cyril Cathcart, Michaela Everett, Roxanne Luna, Julie Barrett, Tina Gaerte, Pam Gillis, and Linda Bain

Susan Crabtree was in the library one Sunday morning and overheard some of our young readers talking about The Shadow Children series by Margaret Haddix.  They were telling us how much they enjoyed reading the series,  The problem - we did not have the whole series!  Susan completed our series for us and now we have all of the books in this series.  Just how good are these books?  Our book review this month was written by Joseph.  He is the young man that was telling us all about this series.

AMONG THE HIDDEN

(Background info)  The Shadow Children takes place in the future when families can only have two children.  If by chance, they have a third child, they have to hide and not be a part of the family.

"What I like about Among the Hidden is that there is drama.  When Luke finds another third child (her name is Jen) she dies.  Luke gets a fake I.D. and tries to save all of the third children."

Joseph was intrigued by this whole concept of the third children because of the size of his own family.   What if we were living in that generation?  What would happen to all of the third children in our church?

October is Staff Appreciation Month at West Hills and Life's Journey Sunday School Class decided to do something different for them this month.  They have purchased over twenty new books for our Library in honor of Brother Jonas, Ross, Stan, Debbie and Janet.  This gift will continue to bless others for many years to come.

Some of the new books have already been put into our inventory.  Be sure and check the Recent Additions page on the right hand side of the blog.

Remember Thursday October 24th is a Library Work Day.  We will meet in the Library at 9:00 am and work until 12:00.  Everyone is welcome.  We can use your help.  Bring a sack lunch and we will eat togehter at 12.00.

We  will try to publish another blog soon to keep you abreast of what is happening in the library.  Until then, please continue to pray for those who are sick and those facing difficult times.

Recipe for a Happy Life

Anyone who gets on the internet these days cannot escape the fact that we love to eat!  Even my husband sent me a link to a recipe that sounded good to him a few days ago.  Last night I decided to give it a try!  To my surprise it was very good and we both  liked it. This is the way it looked before going into our oven.

I do have a recipe that I would like to share with you.  It is listed at the bottom of the blog.

Since I am a former Home Economics major (our youth now call it something else) I am interested in all things that have to do with homemaking. (Well, except maybe ironing.)  But you know what?  My biggest interest should  not be my home on this earth, but on my Heavenly Home.

We had a very good lesson in Sunday School this week and I have been thinking about it ever since.  We also had an excellent sermon and it reminded me of the freedoms that we have in this country.  Many of our fathers and grandfathers and their fathers and grandfathers are responsible for these freedoms that we so often take for granted.  Thank you to our choir, our pastor and our teachers for reminding us how special it is to live in the United States of America, one nation under God.  We, as Christians, need to take a firm stand to make sure that we remain a nation under God.

We are preparing for a revival  at WHBC and the preparation should begin with "me". I am asking these questions of myself:

How much time am I spending in God's Word?
How often and how long do I talk to Him in prayer for my family, my friends, strangers, the lost?
Is there Love in my heart?
Am I compassionate?
Am I supportive of my church staff and leaders?
Am I giving my best to God?

This is called "soul searching" and when I truly take a look at myself and my habits, I find that there is definitely room for improvement.  I have the assurance that I am a child of God and that he loves me unconditionally.  How am I loving Him?

In Ezekiel 36:26, God says:
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Holman Standard Version

The Youth are Coming the Youth are Coming the Youth are Coming

What a great day we had in the Library last week.  In the  fifteen minutes between Sunday School and the Morning Worship service, we had at least six people in the Library checking out media.  Four under the age of  sixteen checked out books and one in the same age bracket checked out a DVD.  The one adult that was there was so impressed with the excitement exhibited, she volunteered to purchase some additional books for our youth.  Praise the Lord!  We have been able to complete one series of seven books that are currently being read.  We will have a book review of this series by one our young people in  next  month's blog.

We have started purchasing another series for this age group. There are seventeen books in this series and we only have two.  Let's continue to encourage our youth and children to read.  If you would like to help with the purchase of these books, contact a member of  the Library Committee.

Thanks for our donations this month:

Cindy Blades continues to donate many DVD's, books and CD's as their family finishes with them.
Debbie Irvin - A Story of God and All of Us - by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett
Julie Barrett - three more books from Thomas Kinkade's Cape Light Series - A Christmas Star, A Wish for Christmas and Christmas Treasures.  (We have several ladies reading this series.)
Tara Williams - Pearl by Lauraine Snelling .  This is #2 in the Dakotah Treasures Series and completes this collection.  We now have all four books for your reading pleasure.

Thank you so much for your donations.  If you have books in good condition that you no longer want to keep, will you please consider donating them to our Library.  If they are not suitable for our church library, that is okay.  We have a site on the internet where we can swap them for books that we want or need.

Feel free to share this recipe with your family and friends.

----- divider -----
Take twelve whole months...
Clean them thoroughly of all Bitterness, Rumors, Hate and Jealousy;
In other words make them as Fresh and as Clean as possible.

Now cut each month into 28, 30, or 31 different parts.
But don't make up the whole batch at once.
Instead - prepare it one day at a time.

Mix the following ingredients well each day:
One part of Faith
One of Patience
One of Courage,
One of Work.

Add one part each of Hope, Faithfulness, Generosity, and Kindness.
Blend with one part Prayer, one part Meditation, and one Good Deed.
Season the whole thing with a dash of Good Spirit, a Sprinkle of Fun,
A Pinch of Play, and a Cupful of Good Humor.

Pour all these into a Vessel of Love.
Cook thoroughly over Radiant Joy, Garnish with Smiles,
And Serve with Quietness, Unselfishness, and Cheerfulness.

If you follow this recipe,
You are bound to have a Happy Life.

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Bloom where you are planted...There is a bulletin board in the hallway near the Library that says volunteers are needed to fill positions in our church.  I have seen this board for several weeks now but I have not noticed if any of the positions have been filled.  When praying about a topic for this month's blog, this bulletin board kept popping into my mind.

We have so many opportunities available to us to share the blessings that God has provided.  My daughter-in-law is leaving for Uganda later this month to help share her faith with its people by participating in a Vacation Bible School.  Most of us will never have an opportunity like that, but we all have the opportunity to be missionaries in our own church and community.  Take a look around you at all the preparation for our Vacation Bible School.  Rebecca and many others  have been working on this event for months.  Those who have served in VBS during past years all relate stories of how much they have been blessed by the number of children who have come to know our Lord through VBS.

God has given at least one special gift to each of us.  Find a position in our church where you would like to serve.  There are places for every one of us to use the talents that God has provided.  From nursery workers to security personnel, from teachers to office workers, from maintenance to special events  - just look around you with a spirit willing to serve and God will provide the opportunity.

We all have stories to tell of our own experiences and we never know when the opportunity might arise for us to help someone with a difficult situation.   We can be the inspiration that others need because, through God, we have overcome those situations in our own lives.  One does not often think about a library being a place for deep conversations.  Several of us on the library committee are discovering that it is a great place for deep conversations by being available to those who need someone to just listen to them and let them know that they are loved.  Bloom where you are planted and then sew seeds of love and kindness to those that come in contact with you.

Thank You to Pam Gillis Debbie Irvin and Cindy Blades for your contributions to the Library this month.

Did you know the West Hills Baptist Church Library's Facebook page had 773 visitors last week?  Amazing!  You can see our page at https://www.facebook.com/WestHillsBaptistChurchLibrary.

The Garland Series by Reba Stanley

This is a three book series set in Garland, Texas, following Joyce McIntosh and her family as they learn to live out their faith and find love in the process.

Storms, the first book, opens with Joyce at the graveside of her husband, Paul, whose death has left her a single mom to five children. Life as she has known it is over. As the story continues, we watch as she struggles to cope with this trial (and a few others) and how this impacts her faith and her children.

No matter your age or situation in life, I think you can find something to relate to in these books. The author writes in a conversational style that makes for an easy read. I'm sure if you read the first one, you'll want to see what happens next in The Rancher, and Where My Heart Lies. But most importantly, the author desires to glorify God through her writing. While romance is a strong theme, the character's spiritual journeys are a highlight of this series.

Note:  This book review was written by Tara Montgomery, a personal friend of the author Reba Stanley.

Until next month remember...

Library Ministry Has New Tool

Good News to Share

We are pleased to announce that thanks to Michael Wright, our Media Library now has a new tool to reach beyond our physical doors.   A video of our Sunday Morning Worship Service will be posted each week on our Facebook page.  We will also have copies on DVD in our Library that can be checked out and shared with your family, friends and  neighbors.  Use this ministry tool to share with those who are homebound and unable to attend our worship services and also to introduce Christ to those who not have a personal relationship with Him.

"7 Out of 10 people in this county (Wilson County, Tennessee) are not in church"

When Brother Jonas made this statement in his message this morning I was very shocked.   I immediately began to take a mental  inventory of my friends and neighbors to try and identify who these seven people might be.   These are the ones that I need to reach.  These are the ones that I personally need to invite to Sunday School.   Will you join me in accepting the challenge that was presented to us this morning?  It really burdens me to think that just maybe one of those seven is a close friend or family member.  Perhaps its that little boy or girl just down the street.  Maybe they are just waiting on an invitation from me...or you!

Let's become a church family of caring people and reach out to those who are not in church in this county.   They are waiting for us to show that we care.

 New Donations

Thank you to Julie Barrett and Tara Montgomery for recent donations made to the Library.

Another wish granted! Thanks to a very generous donor, we now have a copy of the new mini series "The Bible" on DVD.

 Are You a Church Member?

This article was recently published in a LifeWay newsletter.  We are sharing this article in its entirety for those of you who may have not had the opportunity to see it.

I Am a Church Member by Thom Rainer

When Michael and Liam began meeting for Monday morning breakfast at 6 a.m. more than five months ago, they originally thought it would be a one-time event. They met in a couples' Bible study group in their church. For many reasons, they hit it off and were becoming good friends. The two men enjoyed their time together so much that the one-time event became a weekly event.
Still, Michael was caught off guard on that particular Monday morning. Liam loved the poached eggs in the little restaurant; it was his regular order. But on this Monday morning, he hadn't touched them. He was barely sipping his coffee.
Liam didn't take long to get to the point. "Michael," he began, "Lana and I have decided to leave the church." The pause seemed to last minutes. Neither of the men knew who should speak next. Michael took the initiative and spoke softly yet deliberately. "You want to tell me about it?" Michael inquired. He honestly didn't know if Liam wanted to say any more about it. His friend seemed resolute. Nevertheless, Liam began to explain his feelings and decision.
"Lana and I went to the church to learn deep truths about the Bible," Liam offered. "But Pastor Robert is just not feeding us. We're not getting anything out of his messages. Sitting in the service on Sunday morning is a waste of our time."
Michael didn't respond but could tell that Liam had more to say.
"There are several great people in the church," Liam continued. "You and Karen are the best, and there are a few more like you." He paused and his facial expression became even more serious. "But, honestly, Michael, our church is full of hypocrites. Did you hear Jim at the kids' basketball game? He embarrassed me the way he was calling out the refs. What kind of testimony is that for a Christian? And of course, everyone knows about Neal. He was supposedly this pillar of the church, and we found out he's been cheating on his wife for more than a year. What kind of church is this with these kinds of people?"
Liam was angry but controlled as he continued to vent. "Look, Pastor Robert acts like he cares for us, but I'm not sure he does. I told him that Lana's dad was in the hospital for hernia surgery, and he never visited him."
Michael knew that Lana's father was not a church member, and he lived 50 miles away. He also knew that Pastor Robert called him and prayed with him. But he also knew that any rebuttal would not be timely at the moment. Michael held his tongue.
It seemed that Liam's mild rant was winding down. Liam seemed exhausted, ready to bring the conversation to a close. He did, however, offer a few pointed comments and two insightful questions.
"Michael," Liam began softly. "I really like you and Karen and your kids. All of you are a class act." He paused briefly. "But you seem enthused about the church. You keep serving and contributing. Don't get me wrong, but I wonder at times if you are blind to all the problems in the church."
Then Liam offered a closing that spoke more than he realized. "We are two different types of church members," he stated. "Why is that? Why do we have such different perspectives?"

The difference

Nine out of 10 churches in America are declining or growing at a slower pace than that of their communities. Simply stated, churches are losing ground in their own backyards.
Another way of looking at it is generationally. About two-thirds of the Builder generation, those born before 1946, are Christians. However, only 15 percent of Millennials, those born between 1980 and 2000, are Christians. Millennials are the largest generation in America's history with almost 80 million members.
And we have all but lost that generation.
We can blame it on the secular culture. And we often do.
We can blame on the godless politics of our nation. We do that as well.
We can even blame it on the churches, the hypocritical members, and the uncaring pastors. Lots of Christians do that.
I'm proposing that we who are church members need to look in the mirror. I'm suggesting that congregations across America are weak because many of us church members have lost the biblical understanding of what it means to be a part of the body of Christ.
We join our churches expecting others to serve us, to feed us, and to care for us.
We don't like the hypocrites in the church, but we fail to see our own hypocrisies.
God didn't give us local churches to become country clubs where membership means we have privileges and perks.
He placed us in churches to serve, to care for others, to pray for leaders, to learn, to teach, to give, and, in some cases, to die for the sake of the gospel.
Many churches are weak because we have members who have turned the meaning of membership upside down. It's time to get it right. It's time to become church members as God intended. It's time to give instead of being entitled.

A new path

Though it's a small step, I'm suggesting that church members consider a new path. There are six steps we should carefully and prayerfully take. Let's consider each of these steps to be the type of church member God called us to be.

First, let's note the metaphor of membership.

It's not membership as in a civic organization or a country club. It's the kind of membership given to us in 1 Corinthians 12:27, "Now you are the body of Christ and individual members of it." Because I'm a member of the body of Christ, I must be a functioning member, whether I'm an "eye," an "ear," or a "hand." As a functioning member, I will give. I will serve. I will minister. I will evangelize. I will study. I will seek to be a blessing to others.

Second, I will strive to be a source of unity in the church.

I know there are no perfect pastors, staff, or other church members. But I'm not perfect either. I won't be a source of gossip or dissension. One of the greatest contributions I can make is to do all I can in God's power to help keep the church in unity for the sake of the gospel.

Third, I will not let my church be about my preferences and desires; that's self-serving.

I'm in this church to serve others and to serve Christ. My Savior went to the cross for me. I can deal with any inconveniences and matters that aren't my preference or style.

Fourth, I will pray for my pastor every day. His work is never-ending.

His days are filled with constant demands for his time, with the need to prepare sermons, with those who are rejoicing in births, with those who are traveling through the valley of the shadow of death, with critics, with the hurts and hopes of others, and with the need to be a husband and a father. My pastor cannot serve our church in his own power.

Fifth, I will lead my family to be good members of this church as well.

We will pray together for our church. We will worship together in our church. We will serve together in our church. And we will ask Christ to help us fall deeper in love with this church because He gave His life for her.

Book Reviews

Submitted by Debbie Irvin

This book has been purchased for the church library, but I was fortunate enough to read it before it hit the shelves.  I had never heard of this author before, but was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to more of her writings.

It was a quick read because it was spell binding and really holds your attention.  The book offers everything from mystery, romance, a bit of history, adventure and faith of the characters.  The book described one of the characters that lost her way as a young woman but who finds mercy and forgiveness in her home town.

I would highly recommend this book and Book 2 in this series.  I read both books in just a few days.

Shattered (Alaskan Courage Book #2) by Dani Pettrey

Book 2 of Alaskan Courage delves further into the lives of the family and once again offers suspense, romance and faith.

It was exciting to read about how a long time friendship turned into a deep love between two of the characters.  The family dynamics in this book were wonderful.  An inspiring story of how close knit family members and friends deal with the challenges of staying true to themselves and their responsibilities, while maintaining their relationships.

I rarely set the book down until it was finished. I would definitely recommend this book.

The Power of the Cross

What a wonderful service we had on Easter Sunday morning at West Hills Baptist Church.  Stan did such an amazing job putting the drama together.  The music was outstanding and I have been singing The Power of the Cross since Sunday.  The choir looked and sounded great.  It would be nice if all those who sang this week would continue with the choir the rest of the year.  It was a very touching performance and I would like to thank everyone who participated in any way with this production.

Thank you to Carrie Dixon for sharing the picture.
The cross had been on my mind for several weeks before Easter.  This has always been a special time for me to reflect on the greatest gift that anyone ever gave to me.  The gift of everlasting life is something that we should celebrate every day of our life.
It always amazes me (and pleases me) when God shows Himself to me during my daily activities.  One morning several days before Easter I was on the way to Hermitage.  Traveling down Lebanon Road something caught my eye.  I SAW A CROSS!  It was in front of me and seemed to be saying "follow me".  I had to step on the accelerator and fish out my phone to record this miracle before it disappeared.  This is what I saw...
Do you see the cross?  This small glimpse of God made me happy all day long and I will always remember this morning and this gentle reminder of His love and sacrifice.  I know it is corny but that day I sang:
 Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound
that saved a WRECK
Like me...
Now I know that is not the correct lyric to that song, but I did see a WRECKER that morning and it brought me face to face with the cross.  What a great way to start any day.

BOOK REVIEW

The Reason by William Sirles

I read this book because it was featured as a new book in the library.  Although it is Christian fiction, the miracles which occur in this book are very similar to those we read about in the Bible.

This book contains a series of miracles that take place in the lives of a man of God, his family and his friends. One man (a carpenter) is always involved when the miracles happen.  Folks in the town begin to wonder who he is and how these things are happening.
From the beginning to the very end, his message is “Only Believe.”  Throughout the book you watch the changes in people’s lives as they meet this Man and question their own belief system.
The book’s message to the reader is to believe in the unseen and not put their faith in man or modern medicine.

This month's book review is by Debbie Irvin

Several books from our Wish List were donated during the month.  They will be processed soon and added to our inventory.  These additions will complete several of the Karen Kingsbury series.  We still need a few more to finish the series we have started.  See our Wish List on the right hand side of the page for the titles.

Thank you to Billy and Bobby Shelton for their donation during March.  Thanks also for those anonymous donations made during the month.

DVD's Are Gaining Popularity

We are also seeking donations of family oriented movies on DVD.  We are no longer providing VHS movies.  Please limit your donations to those on DVD.
Also, summertime is fast approaching and the traveling season will begin soon.  Many families enjoy listening to audio books while on the road.  We have a few in the library but would also like to add more to our inventory for your enjoyment.
We will provide some suggested titles on our Wish List next month for both DVD's and Audion Books.

FACEBOOK PAGE - WEST HILLS BAPTIST CHURCH LIBRARY

Our Facebook page is gaining in popularity.  It is amazing how many from all over the United States visit our page.  One day we reached well over 200 people.  How exciting it is for the Library Committee to see this ministry grow almost daily.  Thanks for sharing us with your friends.

Francine Rivers is one of the most popular Christian writers in our library.  If you have not read her Marta's Legacy series, take a few minutes and watch the trailers for these two books. Just click on the two links below.

Because He Lives

As I stared out my window today on this dreary rainy morning , I was searching for a way to begin this blog.  Water was standing in my neighbor's field and it looked like a lake.  The sky was dark and the rain continued to fall.  I was having a hard time getting inspired.

I decided to take a break and got up from the computer and walked into another room... and another view!  Looking out this window I saw a forsythia bush with an empty bird nest left over from last year.   At the bottom of the bush I also saw several bright yellow blossoms.  While looking at that empty nest I suddenly thought of an empty tomb and the bright yellow blossoms made me think of Easter morning.  Hallelujah!

Isn't is amazing how quickly one can go from gloom to jubilation?  Sometimes this is because of your outlook on life, or in my case this morning, just "looking out on life".  It is still officially winter but in my mind, it is now spring.  Because Jesus died on that cross for me and rose again I have hope for the future.  My sins are forgiven and He has washed me white as snow.  The words to the song Because He Lives now washes over me and I am truly blessed.   What a wonderful and loving God we serve.

A Special Thank You
To our donors this month:

Please leave your name with any items you may donate to the Library.  We want to be sure and recognize your gifts.  We appreciate them!

We Need Your Help
1)We have several books and DVD's that have been checked out and are now past due.   Please check your homes, cars, rooms, and offices and return any that you may have overlooked.

 2) If you are looking for a place to serve at WHBC a few hours a month, we could use your help in the Library.  We need workers to man the Library on some Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings and Wednesday evenings.

3) Please tell others about our Library Blog and our Facebook page.

Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

And then one day I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone!
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives!

The Gift of Love

February is here!

The groundhog says that spring will be here soon and florists and merchants tell us that Valentine's Day is fast approaching.

As we search for that special gift for our loved ones, we should not lose sight of the one who first loved us.  He loved us while we were still in our mother's womb!  And just look what he did for us.  We are told in John 3:16:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

What a wonderful gift that God gave to us.   The gift of everlasting life.  Because he loves us.  Let's share that exciting news with everyone and tell them how they  too can receive that gift.

January Was a Great Month

Traffic in the Library continues to increase.  Several people are reading series and come in each week to get the next book in their current series.  We have many great series from authors such as Karen Kingsbury, Tracie Peterson, Thomas Kincaid, Lori Wick, Terri Blackstock, and Francine Rivers.  I am sure that you can find one that would interest you.

If you would like to write a Book Review on a book in our Library, we would love to publish it in our Blog.  It does not have to be lengthy, just let others know what the book was about and what you think about it.  Would you recommend it to your friends?  Please take a few minutes and write down your feelings about the last book that you read and drop it off at the Library.

Quest for the Nail Prints

Quest for the Nail Prints - Book Review

I found this book at a yard sale this fall and was immediately drawn to it.  The author is from Memphis so I wanted to see what he had to say.  Once I started reading it, I could not put it down!

Quest for the Nail Prints is the story of three ordinary people chosen by God for an extraordinary journey. A journey so amazing even they have a hard time believing that it is real. Through unrelated circumstances, Dr. Elizabeth Stewart, Reverend Paul Ryann, and Professor Leonardo Van Eaton find themselves sharing a journey to the Holy Land . . . when suddenly they are thrust back in time nearly two thousand years and find themselves face to face with the rugged, radical rabbi known throughout the region as Jesus of Nazareth.

This is the best Christian Fiction book that I have read.  It touched me on a very emotional level.  Can you even imagine traveling with Jesus during his last days before Calvary or attending the Last Supper in the upper room?  I laughed, I cried, I wanted to share this book with everyone I know. This book could change your life.   It is now available in our Library.  Reserve it today by emailing us at library@westhillsbaptistchurch.com.

New Ideas...New Challenges...New Year...Yes!

Happy New Year

Thankful for the Past and Looking Forward to 2013

We are very thankful for your support of the Library during the past five years.  We have made so much progress during this time and especially during 2012.  Your donations of reading materials, your many kind words, the committee's gift of their time and your participation in checking out the books, reading them and sharing them with others have been above and beyond our imagination.

We would like to acknowledge and publicly thank our pastor and our staff for their vision and their leadership role in the growth of our Library.  We have some ideas for new ways to reach others in our community during 2013 by utilizing our resources in the Library and participating volunteers from our membership.  Stay tuned.  You will hear more about this in the coming weeks.

Benefits of Reading

I recently stumbled across this on the web and it immediately caught my attention. The post was titled 8 Benefits of Reading  (or Ways Reading Makes You Better at Life).

The reasons listed were:
  • Enhanced Smarts - those that read have higher GPA's, higher intelligence, and general knowledge than those that don't.   Reading, in general, makes you smarter, and it keeps you sharp as you age.
  • Reduces Stress - When reading a book your mind shifts gears. Where you might have a had a stressful day, a book can easily distract you. Fiction is fantastic for this. Reading an awesome fiction book is perfect right before bed time. Though sometimes it’s hard to put the book down if it’s really good. Still, you’ll be relaxed .
  • Greater Tranquility -Reading can soothe like no other. Even if you are a pretty high-energy person, reading forces you to sit and be still. This daily act of making yourself be quiet and still has been nothing short of miraculous for anxiety and the“fidgety factor”.
  • Improved Analytical Thinking -   studies have found that analytical thinking is boosted by reading. Readers improve their general knowledge, and more importantly are able to spot patterns quicker. If you can spot patterns quicker, your analytical skills receive a boost.
  • Increased Vocabulary -reading increases your vocabulary and improves your spelling, but did you know that reading increases your vocabulary more than talking or direct teaching? Reading forces us to look at words that we might not have seen or heard recently. In fact, language in children’s books are likely to be more sophisticated than your average conversation.     Increased vocabulary is especially crucial for bloggers or writers. All successful writers will tell you that in order to write well, you need to read. Every day. You’ll be surprised at the words you start incorporating into your writing. A beefier vocabulary isn’t just for writers though. Knowing what other people are saying and using the perfect words to convey your feelings is a critical part of being a better human. Better listeners are more successful in life.
  • Improved Memory -  Some people have awful memories and cannot remember what they ate for breakfast, let alone things like names and addresses.  Most find that they remember stuff much easier when they have been reading consistently.  I do not have any scientific data to back this up, but it pretty safe to assume that reading helps your memory.
  • Helps Prioritize Goals- Many times we're certain we know what we "really want" in life.  Yet I've found that activities like reading show me things I didn't know about myself.  My mind will drift to things that I'd really like to do, and it isn’t long that these little lapses in reading start to cycle. The same sort of goals keep popping into my head, allowing me to see what I really want to do. For example, say I’ve been playing music on a consistent basis, and I’ve always wanted to produce and distribute my own music. As I’ve been reading, I’ve found that song ideas and other general thoughts on music keep popping into my head. When you remove yourself from your work environment, you’ll start to see things that you might really want to do, that you’re not doing yet. Reading gives you a chance to let your mind wander.  It’s my times reading that have really pushed me into giving music a serious go.
This year, why don't we try an experiment and read a book at least every six weeks and see what changes or improvements we see in our own life.
